FIVE YOUTH BOWLERS ARE EARL ANTHONY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to five United States Bowling Congress Youth members in recognition of their academic achievements and contributions to their communities.

The five scholarship winners were selected by the International Bowling Campus Youth Committee based on applications and each will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The scholarship is named in honor of legendary bowler Earl Anthony, who was dedicated to helping youth bowlers.

Selected to receive the Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship are:

• Megan Hand, Minneola, Florida
• Amy Lund, Plain City, Utah
• Jacob McCarey, Orlando, Florida
• James Thevenot, Tucson, Arizona
• Sydney Wilson, Millbrook, Alabama

Megan Hand is a senior at Lake Minneola High School where she has taken eight Advanced Placement courses along with numerous honors classes. She is a National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars member. She is in the Marching and Concert Band and in the Art Club.

She was a counselor at the Montverde Academy’s Summer STEM Camp, working with children from kindergarten through second grade. She also served as a teacher assistant at the academy during the spring.

Amy Lund is a senior at Fremont High School and recently was selected valedictorian of her class. She has taken six Advanced Placement Courses and through concurrent enrollment classes will earn her associate degree in April. She is a member of the National Honor Society, president of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), co-captain of the National Academic League (NAL) team, and a member of the Science and Spanish clubs.

Through HOSA, the club for students who plan to pursue careers in the medical field, she has worked on food drives and making food packs for elementary children, worked blood drives, and has served as a Spanish Club tutor. She also has served as a youthcommittee member for Northern Utah USBC.

Jacob McCarey is a senior at William R. Boone High School. He earned the Advanced Placement Scholar Award, is a member of the National Honor Society and Math Honor Society and was accepted into the Academy of Finance Magnet program where he completed 160 hours as an intern for a local business.

He has served with United Against Poverty Orlando, worked the Coalition for the Homeless Soccer Clinic, and has been a math tutor. He is a four-year member of the school’s varsity bowling team and was named team captain.

James Thevenot attends BASIS Tucson North and the senior is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and a National AP Scholar. He is a member of the Chess Club, Math Counts and Science Bowl competitive teams, and the Economics Club/Econ Challenge competitive economics team.

He has volunteered at Pawsitively Cats and Tucson2Tails animal rescue shelters, and at Agua Linda Farm, a local organic farm, doing general work and working with customers during the annual farm festivals. He also is an active member of the Community Gardens of Tucson, a program to teach productive gardening.

Sydney Wilson attends Stanhope High School and the senior is a National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Beta Club member, and is the Alabama Girls State Representative for her school. She also is in the Drama Club, Show Choir, and Marching/Concert band.

She has done volunteer work with Joy for Johnny, a respite ministry for families who have children with special needs, and is classroom aide for her school’s special needs class. She has been on three mission trips.

Each of the Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship winners had to be enrolled in their senior year of high school or presently attending college, be current USBC Youth members in good standing, and had a minimum cumulative grade-point average 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale).
