Anthony Simonsen Wins Brunswick Euro Challenge for Fourth PBA Tour Title

Missed spare in 10th frame proves costly to Sweden’s Jenny Wegner

MUNICH, Germany (March 18, 2018) – Anthony Simonsen, with two strikes and nine pins in the 10th frame, rallied to defeat Sweden’s Jenny Wegner, 213-211, to win the PBA International-World Bowling Tour Brunswick Euro Challenge at Dream-Bowl Palace.

Simonsen, the top qualifier, quickly fell behind when Wegner, the 2016 Qubica AMF World Cup women’s champion, started the title match with five strikes. But the contest changed direction when the 23-year-old Swedish kindergarten teacher failed to convert the 1-2-4-10 washout in the seven frame. She still had the match under control until she left the 2-8 in both the ninth and 10th frames, failing to convert the spare in her final frame. Simonsen, who had thrown only one strike on the right lane previously in the match, then threw two strikes before leaving the 10 pin on his final shot to capture his fourth PBA Tour title.

Simonsen, a 21-year-old two-handed player from Austin, Texas, started the seven-game Step Three match play round with games of 300, 287 and 278 – an 865 series – to expand his lead and he comfortably maintained his position all the way to the championship match.

In the first match of the three-player stepladder finals, Thailand’s Yannaphon Larpapharat dug himself into a 21-pin hole after failing to convert a pair of splits, and Wegner had a double and a turkey in a clean game for a 225-214 win to advance to the title match.

Next on the Go Bowling! PBA Tour’s 2018 schedule will be the United States Bowling Congress Masters April 8-15 at the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse, N.Y., where defending champion Jason Belmonte of Australia will try for an unprecedented fifth Masters title, which also would result in a PBA record-tying 10th major championship.

PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel will live stream all qualifying and three-game double-elimination match play rounds of the Masters before the finals air live on ESPN on April 15 at 1 p.m. EDT. For Xtra Frame subscription information, visit xtraframe.tv.
