Voss Beats Sullins in Title Match Thriller to Win

PBA60 David Small’s JAX 60 National Championship

Voss defeats Sullins 264-256 in title match decided in 10th frame for first PBA60 title

JACKSON, Mich. (Aug. 5, 2019) – PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss, a 25-time Go Bowling! PBA Tour and two-time PBA50 Tour titlist, defeated Harry Sullins 264-256 in the title match to capture the PBA60 David Small’s JAX 60 National Championship in memory of Mel Wolf title Monday at JAX 60 Lanes for his first PBA60 win.

Competing in the tournament exclusively for players 60 years of age and older, Voss started the match with eight strikes before he opened in the ninth frame after leaving the 4-6-7 split. Sullins, who also was trying for his first PBA60 title, was able to stay in the match with a string of eight strikes of his own after a 7-10 split in the second frame. The USBC Hall of Famer, who is a five-time PBA Tour and three-time PBA50 Tour winner, had a chance to win the match with a strike on the second ball of the 10th frame but left a solid 10 pin which gave the win to Voss.

“That’s why I bowl right there,” the 61-year-old Voss said of his victory. “I wanted the 300 game but it probably turned out more exiting the way it ended. It doesn’t matter how old you are or how many times you’ve done it, winning never gets old.

“I was really into it and Harry was too,” Voss added. “We were really pushing each other. I got a little slow with that shot in the ninth frame but fortunately I learned from it.”

Voss had a 13-3 overall match play record including a 6-0 run in the final round which contributed to his surge to earn the top seed for the stepladder finals.

“I didn’t feel I was bowling that great early in the tournament but when I got to match play I figured out I was just arcing the ball too much,” Voss said. “As it turned out I could just move a little further to the right and not put so much arc on the ball.”

Sullins, the no. 2 seed, won the semifinal match thriller 235-234 over No. 3 seed former Team USA member Jerry Sikora who left the 3-9 on his final shot of the 10th frame to give Sullins the win and a berth in the title match.

In the first stepladder match, three-time PBA50 Tour and one-time PBA60 titlist Mike Dias beat No. 5 seed and newly-crowned PBA60 Player of the Year Ron Mohr 211-200. In the second match Sikora beat Dias 227-190 to meet Sullins in the semifinal.

PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, 72, led the first four rounds of the tournament but eventually finished sixth, losing to Mohr in the position round match in the final match play round to miss the finals.

The tournament was named in honor of longtime PBA50 competitor Mel Wolf who passed away in 2011. The one-time PBA50 Tour titlist was the driving force in bringing the senior tour to Jackson in 1992.

The PBA60 Dick Weber Championship presented by The DeHayes Insurance Group and 900 Global at Pro Bowl West in Fort Wayne, Indiana concludes the 2019 PBA50/60 season Aug. 7-9. Mohr, an 11-time PBA50 Tour and two-time PBA60 titlist, is the defending champion.
